“A Tribute to my Father”

“A Tribute to My Father” was written by Kathleen’s oldest brother, Francis, often known as F V Hughes to distinguish him from his father who had the same Christian name and surname.

There is no date on this paper but it appears to have been written in healthy old age. Francis died aged 94 in 1975, so at a guess the paper was written in 1955, possibly inspired by the work that Kathleen was doing on her little book “Mum’s Memories”, completed in August 1955. Maybe Kathleen had asked her older brother for some recollections.

The account shows, as indeed do so many other Hughes items, how deeply religious the family was.

In his training to be a priest, Francis went first to Keble, Oxford, for three years, then spent one year in Ely. It was at Ely that he was ordained, first as a deacon, then as a priest, and, although the wording is not quite clear, his father appears to have come to both ceremonies.
